Black Wii Is A Big Hit In Europe
Video gaming is an activity that, as a rule, tends to take place in teenage bedrooms. Your kids get to about ten years old and you buy them a games console (after all, all their friends have got them). They then disappear into the bedroom for hours on end. You see them occasionally when they emerge, red eyed, for toilet breaks and a quick snack to give them the energy they need to level up.
However, that all changed when the Nintendo Wii console was released. The Wii was a console for the living room rather than the bedroom. There are a number of reasons for this.
In the first place, the Wii's motion sensitive controller meant that the way games were played was much more intuitive. Games were easier to learn, no need to remember that button X is to jump, button Y lets you breathe fire and button Z executes a back-flip. In fact, Wii games are so easy to play that even adults can learn them in a matter of minutes.
Also, because of the physical element of Wii games, there's some exercise involved. Not just Wii Fit - but virtually all of the Wii games involve a certain element of jumping around, much more so than the typical games found on other consoles. That needs a bit of space.
For some reason, which is difficult to quantify precisely, Wii games and the Wii console seem to have a more social element than has been seen up to now with other PC or console games. You can "play the computer" if you want of course, but Wii games tend to be much more fun as part of a group of gamers.
It might be the fact that you need to jump about waving your hands in the air, and generally make yourself look a bit daft. For whatever reason, the Wii gives most enjoyment when performed as a group activity.
As cheesy as it sounds, the Wii is, very genuinely, great fun for children of all ages. Playing Wii games can become a social event. They can help you to exercise and lose weight - and most important of all, they are a lot of fun. The Wii has taken gaming out of the teenage bedroom and put it right in the middle of the family living room.
Maybe that's why Nintendo had such great success when they released a black Wii console bundle in Europe just before Christmas. It turned out to be an extremely popular choice with consumers, possibly because a black games console goes better with the TV, the DVD player, the cable box etc. Currently, the black Wii option is unavailable in the States - but it should be arriving soon.
